Carbon Sequestration

The removal of carbon from the atmosphere to be put into storage in another part of the carbon cycle. This can be performed directly or indirectly.

The former may involve carbon capture and storage, which involves the pumping of carbon dioxide emissions into geological vaults deep underground. The first of these large scale projects was known as Sleipner and took place in the North Sea.
Indirect methods involve such processes as reforestation and ocean iron fertilisation to capture carbon through photosynthesis by trees and phytoplankton and lock it within soils and the seabed respectively. Another method is to modify agricultural processes to enhance soils as carbon sinks.
