Carbon Neutral
To be carbon neutral, a process must remove the same amount of carbon from the atmosphere as it releases i.e. an organisation’s carbon footprint must equal zero if they are to be carbon neutral.
Examples employed to achieve this include carbon offsetting (i.e.
through the planting of trees) and the use of renewable energy. The
most common practice to achieve this goal is to first reduce the amount
of energy used, then to invest in offsetting.
It is important to
calculate every aspect of the organisation’s energy use and its impact
on the environment. Some may claim to be carbon neutral but in reality
are not, as indirect emissions (perhaps sourced from the products
distributed by the organisation or from employee transport) are not
taken into account.
