P

Proxy
A type of data that indirectly represents the conditions of the past. For example, ice core data is a proxy for past climate as one can test the proportion of gases present and so can infer the climatic conditions as well as ice extent. Other examples include tree rings for temperature variation and fossil evidence for sea-level change.
