In 2008 about $705 million was purchased on the voluntary market, representing about 123.4 million metric tonnes of C02 reductions.

The carbon credits purchased are traded and used to fund alternative energy projects around the world such as wind and hydro power, reforestation, soil management and avoiding de-forestation. For example, 20% of carbon emissions are a direct consequence of deforestation, carbon credits are used to either purchase that forest, thereby avoiding the forest being cut down or provide substitutes for forest based products.
